MEET THE FOUNDERS
Bessie Venter-van Zyl (Educational Psychologist)
BA.Ed , B.Ed (Psych), M.Ed (Psychology of Education), M.Ed (Educational Psychology) 1997 RAU
Bessie started her career as a secondary school teacher in 1991, whilst studying part-time in order to obtain her registration as an Educational Psychologist. She did her internship at The School of Achievement (Remedial School)/ Prestasieskool, where she developed a passion for working with children with barriers to learning and barriers to assessment.
She has been in private practice in Kempton Park, since January 2000, and she specializes in assessments for children with ADHD, learning difficulties, and applications for assessment accommodations/concessions, as well as guidance to the parents of these learners. Bessie is a firm believer in the value of a multi-disciplinary team approach when dealing with learning difficulties. She also believes that the learning environment should be adapted to address the individual child’s needs.
This is what Future Wings Academy will offer our learners and their parents. Read more on Bessie
Engela van der Heever – Greyling (Occupational Therapist)
B.Occ.Ther (UP) 2009
Ayers Sensory Integration Trained (2017)
She has been working in Private Practice for 9 years and has a passion and special interest for Early Intervention, Sensory Processing, and children with learning difficulties. Through Future Wings Academy she aims to play a role in touching children’s lives who otherwise may not have been given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Implementing a therapeutic program in a school environment with small classes is the key to optimal learning. She believes that if we teach the students of today, the way we taught them yesterday, we simply rob them of tomorrow. Read more on Engela or Read More on Giving Children Wings

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
We offer small groups, a therapeutic program and the support of a Multi-disciplinary Therapist team, since January 2020:
Our Vision:
To offer a therapeutic remedial learning centre with small groups for learners that requires individualized remedial assistance with scholastic tasks as well as assistance with barriers to assessments/concessions.
Learning Difficulties
Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math. They can also interfere with higher-level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory, and attention. It is important to realize that learning disabilities can affect an individual’s life beyond academics and can impact relationships with family, friends and in the workplace.
Since difficulties with reading, writing and/or math are recognizable problems during the school years, the signs and symptoms of learning disabilities are most often diagnosed during that time.
Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps; of intellectual disability; of emotional disturbance; or of environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages.
Generally speaking, people with learning disabilities are of average or above-average intelligence. There often appears to be a gap between the individual’s potential and actual achievement. This is why learning disabilities are referred to as “hidden disabilities”: the person looks perfectly “normal” and seems to be a very bright and intelligent person, yet may be unable to demonstrate the skill level expected from someone of a similar age.
A learning disability cannot be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong challenge. However, with appropriate support and intervention, people with learning disabilities can achieve success in school, at work, in relationships, and in the community.
Remedial education is designed to meet the ongoing needs of students with disabilities to help them make progress in school. Remedial programs are designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s expected to know.
